School of Foreign Languages

There are 4 proficiency exams held during the academic year:

• Beginning of Term English Proficiency Exam*: Measures the English knowledge of students newly enrolled and those who previously failed the Preparatory Programme.
  *For students who enroll late and are foreign nationals, an additional proficiency exam is held during the semester on dates determined by the School of Foreign Languages Executive Board and published in the academic calendar.
• Winter Break English Proficiency Exam: For students enrolled in the English Preparatory Program for the autumn term who have applied to take the exam.
• End of Year English Proficiency Exam: For all students enrolled in the English Preparatory Program for autumn and spring semesters in the current academic year.
• Summer Programme English Proficiency Exam: Measures the English knowledge of students completing the summer programme at Alanya University.

*Students who score 60 points and above are eligible to enrol in their departments.

**The Preparatory Programme is compulsory for departments with English as the medium of instruction. Students who do not take the Beginning of Term exam or fail the exam will continue in the English Preparatory Program.

1st Session: Listening, Reading and Use of English (2 hours)
The first part begins with the listening exam. Students take notes while listening to two academic texts. Afterwards, they answer multiple choice questions. Following listening, students receive Reading and Use of English booklets and answer multiple choice questions.

2nd Session: Academic Writing (1 hour)
Students are expected to write an academic essay of 5 paragraphs on a topic selected from given alternatives.

3rd Session: Speaking (5 minutes per student)
Students are examined individually and expected to give an organized 3-minute speech on chosen topics. Content, organization, language use, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and coherence are evaluated.
